Consults - Evaluations - Guidance

We provide Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) assessments and services by a certified and licensed speech-language pathologist who specializes in AAC and alternatives to verbal speech.

The speech-language pathologist assesses a person's general communication strengths and weaknesses and helps make a match between available technology and the person's needs. This specialist works with the person, family, and other important team members. Following the assessment, you receive a written report of the assessment with recommendations.

We also provide services to troubleshoot problems and help people know how to use AAC equipment.

Most AAC Services provided by TechOWL are outside of the Assistive Technology Act activities. They are separate programs housed within the same organization.

TechOWL's services are funded by the federal Assistive Technology Act Program that supports state efforts to improve the provision of assistive technology to individuals with disabilities of all ages through comprehensive, statewide programs that are consumer-responsive. The Administration for Community Living is the federal overseeing entity. In Pennsylvania, the Assistive Technology Act Program is called Pennsylvania's Initiative on Assistive Technology or "PIAT".

PIAT makes assistive technology devices and services more available and accessible to individuals with disabilities and their families.

The amount of Pennsylvania’s annual award is based largely on our population and is based on a formula.
